VirusTotal is an excellent online virus scanner that analyzes your files with 40 different antivirus engines. VirusTotal comes in handy especially handy when you don’t have any desktop antivirus app installed on the computer, or you need an extra layer of security for certain files. All you need to do is upload the file to the VirusTotal site via a simple form and wait for the results. If the same file has been recently submitted to VirusTotal, the system will give you the chance to review the analysis, instead of scanning it again.
The whole process can take a while, depending on the file size and the current workload on VirusTotal’s servers. You can see the results in real time, as the file is scanned by all the antivirus engines. The final report includes the complete list of results from 40 antivirus engines, plus user comments and tags – if available for that program.
You can leave user comments anonymously, but if you join the VirusTotal community – which is free – you’ll be able to sign them with your username, see safety ratings, get disinfection tips and more. The only drawback to VirusTotal, if any, is that the maximum file size is 20 MB. Other than that, it’s an excellent tool that provides you with a complete safety report about almost any file.
